Never Leave Your House After a Shuttle Launch

Friday morning the last Space Shuttle Atlantis, embarked on its final mission from Cape Canaveral
to the International Space Station. Hundreds of thousands of people watched its tail of fire head into the cloudy sky. Some cried, some cheered. Some cried and cheered. As for myself, I watched from the comfort of my upstairs window in Cape Canaveral
. I cheered and was pleasantly surprised by the great view I had in spite of the spotty weather and the threat of a scrub. However, the highlight of my day was to be summed up in a few words from my significant other. Those being, “Why don’t you run down to the bank real quick.” As God is my witness, I have no idea what was going through my head when I naively answered, “Sure”, because as quickly as my migraine faded away the previous evening, it came crashing back like the shuttle payload itself as I sat in the inevitable gridlock and pure ridiculousness that ensued thereafter. As for any further “historic events” that take place in Brevard County, I now have made a mental list of details for the next time I lose my mind and venture forth!

For many of us in Brevard County seeing an object shot into space is a common occurrence. Some of us drive along as if nothing is happening; some complain about the traffic and plan accordingly. Some find a nice spot to watch it roar out of sight as the air rumbles. On Monday morning, the last launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour went off without a hitch. I watched it stream through the clouds from my upstairs window and thought about how, as a young child, I had watched almost every launch on a wheeled-in television at school. Now that I am older, I am completely blown way by what we have accomplished as a human race. Above us, we have a space station that just floats around Earth with people in it! And as amazing as that is, the accomplishments of technology have leant a hand in some of the greatest scientific findings in history.
