Merritt Island Haunted House Moves, Expands to Become Largest in Area
The Asylum Haunted House, a Halloween attraction which has been scaring Space Coast patrons alike for the last five Halloween seasons, is moving from Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill in Port Canaveral to the Merritt Square Mall located off of the 520 Causeway on Merritt Island.
The new Merritt Island Haunted House location at the Merritt Square Mall will quadruple the scare experience from 4,000 to 16,000 square-feet, according to haunted house creator, Daniel Todd, Owner of BrevardNightLife.com and 9 Mile Media. “We outgrew Fishlips”, which overtook the restaurant’s first floor during Halloween week, “and we needed to acquire a much larger space to accommodate not only the attraction itself but the growing number of visitors,” he said.
Creating the Asylum in 2008 was two-fold explains Todd: to raise money for local charities and to create a fun, local event for the Halloween season. In its sixth year, this year’s charity organization is Brevard’s Children in Need which supports the over 1600 homeless children in Brevard County. Todd is asking everyone to bring a child’s coat, new or gently used, when they come to the Asylum which will earn them $2 off their regular admission ticket.
“Taken” is this year’s theme, said Todd. “Everyone has a fear of being taken. It’s ambiguous enough to give us a wide selection of what we can do to play on people’s fear.”
